Brno and Moravian Karst
Brno, the capital of the Czech province of Moravia, is the second largest city in the Czech Republic (pop. 400,000), it is large enough to possess all the benefits of a major European centre, but small enough to retin its coziness and charm. Above the city centre there is a huge Baroque Spilberk fortress, from the 19th century used also as a prison, on another hill you will see an outstanding Gothic church of Petrov. During the visit of the city centre you will see all historical sights, including the late Gothic Town Hall with a big crocodile which is a symbol of Brno.
The world-famous karst region is located not far from Brno. It is a fairly hilly landscape dissected by deep valleys of an area about 100 skm, built up of the limestone of Devonian age. The image of the region has been worked out by the runing water since that time, when the region was left by the sea the long by-gone geological epochs ago. The most visited caves are situated on the subterranean Punkva river. These caves have been discovered only in the beginning of the 20th century, they are very popular thanks to their connection with the bottom of the Macocha abyss and the cruise on the subterranean river. It is a very enjoyable visit even for children!
