Dobříš Castle and Svatá Hora (The Holy Mountain)

About one hour drive from Prague there is a charming rococo chateau from the second half of the 18th century. Until the World War II it was the property of the noble family Colloredo-Mansfeld. In 1942 the chateau was expropriated by the Nazis and in 1945 it revolved to the state and was used for about 50 years as the home of writers. In 1998 it was returned together with the French and English Park into private property, the nowadays owner is Jerome Colloredo-Mannsfeld.

During the visit you will have an opportunity to see eleven rooms in the rococo and classicism style, furnishing and paintings becoming from different European regions. Behind the palace there is an unique specimen of garden architecture, French Park, which evokes with its flowery ornaments and cut hedge fences the atmosphere of the Vienna Schonbrunn. It is the pearl among the gardens of the Czech Republic.

With its super panorama, the Holy Mountain has welcomed visitors for more than 330 years. The first miracle happened there in 1632, and stood at the beginning of pilgrimages. Starting in 1653, with Jesuits´carefulness, the small chapel was rebuilt into a spectacular residence. Gradually, it became the most famous Bohemian place of pilgrimage and a significant centre of Marian cult in Europe.

The basilica is situated on the terrace with a balustrade. There are a cloister, four closed chapels and nine open ones in the lower part of the Baroque complex. Apart from the Miraculous Statuette of the Virgin Mary of the Holy Mountain, the main altar, the whole made of silver, is a jewel of the sanctuary at the Holy Mountain.
