Terezín and Lidice Memorial

The small town of Terezín, about 45 minutes out of Prague, reminds a tragic chapter of European history. The former fortress built in times of the Emperor Joseph II in the end of the 18th century was, during the World War II, in 1940, changed and converted into a state prison, in fall 1941 into a Jewish ghetto and a concentration camp by Nazis. It was a place of suffering for over 90.000 prisoners, most of them (about 35.000) lost their lives at this place. The others, still surviving, were deported to other European concentration camps.

With a guide you will visit the large complex of the Small Fortress, Museum and National Cemetery. In the video hall you will see a short film about the history of the camp.

The next stop of your excursion will be at Lidice, small village nearby Prague. Also this place has been connected with the dramatical events of year 1942. In May 1942 the German protector SS-Obergruppenfuhrer R. Heydrich, author of the Terezín Jewish concentration camp, was killed by Czech people and the Gestapo started to look for them. Although there were some insufficient proofs about the blame of Lidice citizens, Nazis decided to burn the village to the ground, the men were shot, women and children were taken to concentration camps, only some children were given to German families for re-education.

You will visit the Memorial of Lidice and a small museum in the rose park at the place of the tragedy.
